I remember the first time I ever watched an episode of Drive Thru History® on our local Christian station – I was instantly hooked! I knew my kids – especially Joey (10 years old) – would really enjoy reviewing the Drive Thru History® “Acts to Revelation” DVD set. We watched two episodes the day it arrived and I wasn’t disappointed!
From the Drive Thru History® website:
Drive Thru History with Dave Stotts® is a fun, fast-paced, content-rich history show that speeds through ancient civilizations, the Holy Land, and the founding of America, allowing the viewer to experience the people, places, and events that shaped our world and the Christian faith.https://www.drivethruhistory.com/about/
Dave Stotts, the host of Drive Thru History®, really pulls you in as he travels to various geographical locations where important Biblical and historical events happened. Throughout each episode, he helps make the events more real to the viewer as he treks along ancient travel routes, exploring the places and people talked about in the Bible. But it’s not all serious, all the time. There are definitely enjoyable comedic moments in each episode as well!
Most of the time, when I sit my kids down to view a documentary-style program, my enthusiasm is met with groans and complaints – but we all looked eagerly forward to watching a new episode.
In Acts to Revelation, Dave brings you – the viewer – along as he visits various locations central to the beginnings of the Christian church. Beginning with the Book of Acts in Jerusalem, he then follows the travels of several of the first Christian missionaries through the Mediterranean region ending with John in the book of Revelation.
This installment of the series includes 18 information-packed episodes on two DVDs presented in Dave’s signature style.
Other series available are:
- The Gospels
- America: Columbus to Constitution
- Holy Land
- Ancient: Christianity and the Birth of Western Civilization
Because we are so fond of this series, we opted to view 3-4 episodes per week from Acts to Revelation. Each episode presented foundational truths of the Christian faith in context of the people, places, and events that helped to shape those truths. We found ourselves pausing the program often to discuss various topics and how they related to us as modern-day followers of Jesus Christ.
Hearing about all that the first Christians endured, through growing pains in the church and persecution from both the Jewish and Roman communities, really made an impact on my 10 year-old. He really began to understand how important it is to remain strong and steadfast in your faith in order to overcome difficulties and trials. The fact that some of these forefathers of the faith endured so much in the name of Jesus – even unto horrible deaths – really helped to ignite a fire in his heart. I cannot express how thankful I am for that!
Prompted by this series, we discussed how blessed we are to live in a time and nation where we are allowed to profess our faith and live our lives according to those beliefs. We discussed how we still experience persecution – though on a much smaller scale than these brave men and women had to endure – and how Christians are still carrying out Jesus’ command to “go forth and make disciples”. We discussed how we can carry out that command ourselves – through sharing the Good News with the lost, loving others the way Jesus loves them, and living in a way that brings glory to God.
Included with the DVD set is a full-color study guide. The guide includes photos from, a summary of, and discussion questions related to each episode. Because merely viewing each episode prompted so much rich discussion among my family, we did not make use of the included study guide. I did however read through the guide and found it to be a great resource and the included photos are really breathtaking. The fact that the case itself looks like a book and opens to display the DVDs with the study guide bound into the middle is really awesome. This case not only is visually appealing, but holds everything together sturdily, protecting all the materials well. I know this to be a fact because it survived an attack from my toddler with no resulting damage!
We are now almost finished with the complete series – with only two more episodes to watch, which we will finish this week. We will be sad when we have no more episodes left to view. We will most likely purchase other sets in the near future to add to our family movie library. We absolutely loved getting to review and enjoy this series and highly reccommend this and other Drive Thru History® series to other Christian families!
